Tips for Buying a Car at Auction in Pennsylvania

  1. Get to the auction early.

You should arrive at our PA auto auction early so that you'll have enough time to view the vehicles before the auction starts. It takes our auctioneers less than one minute to sell a vehicle when its turn comes. So, if you're trying to evaluate a vehicle while it's on the auction block, you'll probably be too late.

Get to Carriage Trade Public Auto Auction early and look at the vehicles beforehand. Our Public Auctions start with the tow-lane vehicles at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. All running cars begin to come through the lanes at 3 p.m. Eastern.

  2. Bring a mechanic with you.

We recommend bringing along a mechanic or someone who is familiar with potential mechanical problems. That way, you know what to look out for when you view the vehicles on our lot ahead of auction time and can plan out your vehicle purchases accordingly.

  3. Focus on vehicles being sold under the "Green Light."

Vehicles sold under our "Green Light" come with added assurance. Our "Green Light" policy gives the buyer until 5 p.m. on the day following the sale to arbitrate a vehicle for any issues with the motor or drivetrain. Please refer to our auction policies for a full description of covered defects.

  4. Know what you're buying.

Our sale catalogs don't always reflect the actual equipment in the vehicle. Because vehicle descriptions are supplied to Carriage Trade by the sellers, we aren't responsible for misprints or inaccuracies. So, it's important to carefully inspect the vehicle before buying -- another reason to arrive at our local car auction ahead of start time!

  5. Know the vehicle you're bidding on.

The vehicle that is being offered for sale leaves the auction area immediately and the bidding continues. When the bidding is complete and the auctioneer says "sold," there is often a different vehicle lining up on the auction block. Pay attention to which vehicle the auctioneer is selling.
